I got up at five thirty yesterday morning and arrived at school at six twenty. I litterally could not see or hear anyone else in the entire school. The silence was eerie. The lobby was huge, dark, and empty. I walked up to the bridge and put my stuff down. I stood there for a while. The bridge is about seven feet wide, thirty feet long, and fifteen feet off the ground. (It is supposed to actually connect something to something else, but no one ever uses it.) I just stood on it and looked out on the lobby. I was the only person in the school. It suddenly struck me that our school is frickin' enormous.

Then I saw Julian walking down the empty hallway. "We should probably start bringing stuff up from the band room," I said. My voice echoed. "Is it locked?" "It's always locked." So then we looked for someone who might have keys. The main office, guidence office, and janitor's office were completely empty. Then we wandered the halls trying to find someone, and there was NO ONE THERE. I know I keep repeating myself. I appologize for being longwinded. But it was such a wierd experience. After about ten minutes, the assistant principal came in and gave us the keys. Greg and Dave showed up a little later, and we were set up by about ten of seven. By seven, Rob still hadn't shown up, but we started playing without him. After every song, when he still hadnít shown up, Greg said ìIím gonna KILL him!î He came in at seven twenty. The school was about half full, and there were already a lot of people watching us.

"I'm gonna KILL you!" Greg shouted as he ran up to the bridge, whipped out his bass, plugged in, and tuned, which took about 30 seconds. (Rob is very good at being late.) "Where WERE you?" "Man, you have no idea how long it takes to wash this thing," he said, referring to his giant fro. That was his only excuse.

Anyway, besides the Rob being late thing, it went about as well as it could have. I think it went better than it ever did in rehearsal. I soloed a lot, and I think I did pretty well. I also missed about a third of math because it took us so long to put everything back in the band room. Man, musical equiptment is HEAVY. My arms and fingers hurt all day. Before we parted in the hallway, Julian said "See you later."

I had third lunch today. I actually sat relatively close to Adam, and we actually had a mini conversation about negative bases, making eye contact and everything. (As in, like, base -3. It's pretty freaky. There's a one's place, a -3's place, a 9's place, a -27's place, etc. So the counting numbers would be 1, 2, 120, 121, 122, 110, 111, 112, 100, 101, 102, 12020, 12021...) Then this girl came in. She said "Oh, there you are," and pulled up a chair and sat down behind him. At this point, I started talking to Molly and Toby. But I would look over once in a while. Once, I saw her pick up his wrist and look at his watch. I used to do this. She is small and pale with noticable light red hair. I've never met her before, and I'm assuming that this is because she's a junior.

In health, we did a "relaxation activity," where she read something aloud that was supposed to make us relax. I tried to relax, but as she read, I got more and more tense. A few tears rolled down my cheeks, but I wiped them away before the rest of the class opened their eyes. "He might have a girlfriend. How is that even possible after TWO WEEKS?" I kept thinking. I mean, that wasn't the only thing stressing me out. I was also nervous about the talent show, and I kept worrying about whether my guitar and amp were okay in the band room where I'd left them. But still...

I'm not sure how I killed time before the talent show, but I know I didn't do anything productive.

Obviously to be continued.
