It doesn’t matter what kind of asshole you are, I’m going to try my absolute best to treat you with kindness and as much respect as I can manage, just don’t thank me for it. It’s not about me and it’s not really about you, asshole. My loved ones live here, and we live in the exact world we make, not in a metaphorical sense, and not in a mystical idyllic sense (things look idyllic to you?) but in the most immediate present empirical sense.
I suppose I’d like it if everyone believed in the whole do unto others as you’d have them do unto you, but, you know, you’re an asshole, you’re not going to do that. So, no, I don’t expect you to do right by me, I do sort of expect you to do right by someone somewhere down the line, but not because I did right by you. My loved ones live in the immediate present, and someone has to be the greater fool, not in the economic sense (well, yeah, that too, but that’s not what I mean here and now) but in the humane sense. Someone has to pay retail for morality, compassion, kindness. I’ll do it as often as I can. It’d be real cool if you’d try hard not to be such an asshole just in a sort of general way. In a specific way, you and yours live here too.
