Yorgos Lanthimos is a Greek director who has also directed a couple other quirky films, Dogtooth and Alps. This is probably considered a black comedy and is centered on a world where people are required to be “paired up” and married. When someone’s partner dies or leaves, the newly single is required to find someone. Resorts are set up to assist singles to find their new partner and they have a limited time to do so or they are turned into an animal of their choice. There are many odd customs in this world:

  1. People find their partners by finding something in common, such as frequent nose bleeds, a lisp, a limp, etc.
  2. There are police who frequently make random checks of people who might look single and they must show proof
  3. At the resort there is a daily hunt for this group of single people who hide out in the woods. When someone catches a single person, they get an extra day added onto their stay.

This movie is not for everyone, but i really enjoyed it. I hear that people usually either really like or dislike The Lobster.
