My Netflix queue is lean, or, rather, fat with shit I’ve seen. They sent me an emu about a new season of mad men (new to Netflix). I’d never seen it, in part because it was all the rage around the water cooler years ago. Maybe once upon a time I was too cool to watch popular shows, but these days (you know, today and the last few decades) I find that the things that make a show popular just aren’t to my tastes.

I have no idea why this was a popular show. I watched the pilot and a few subsequent shows and will probably watch more because it’s not complete tripe, but, the turkey has no stuffing. Hmmm, that was supposed to be more obviously a riff on the emperor and his lack of clothing. Didn’t work. I just don’t get what made it a water cooler conversation starter. I don’t know, I haven’t been around water coolers in a while either.

It can’t really be nostalgia, can it? I mean my favorite part about the era is that all that shit was shattered by strides in civil rights, riots, civil disobedience, war and rumors of war. Sure I was a kid, but that only means the memories are stronger and stand the test of time. Perhaps nostalgia for NYC or the ad industry? That seems like a much smaller niche. I think maybe Gen X’ers looking at it like a history channel show? I don’t know, it reminds me of this museum in Las Vegas. It’s the old Hughs “estate”, a ranch style house with appliances and furniture from late sixties early seventies. With the exception of an acre or so of very green grass, unusual for the desert, it seemed so very not spectacular and the inside seemed a lot like the house I grew up in, wider and shorter, but the same furniture and appliances, down to the console TV.

Is it the novelty of all the smoking, drinking and infidelity? Except for the smoking that’s like modern TV with period haircuts. The show doesn’t even make advertising look that interesting.
