It is a joke that every other weeks, or even every week, tabloid newspapers in the Uk have conflicting stories about the good or bad effects of drinking alcohol - from drinking in moderation to keep healthy to the danger of chemicals in drink.

Well, today an official statement has been made and given maximum publicity - that there is no safe level of drinking for men or women - any level might lead to cancer etc etc. You should certainly have no more than 2 units of alcohol each day - which is a large glass of wine - but preferably should not drink everyday.

There is no doubt that there is a major problem in hospitals with alcohol related illnesses - but as far as I can see this statement is seen as a load of tosh. It is right that pregnant women should not drink - and there is an argument for moderation. But the blanket statement that there is no safe limit seems to be a positive assertion you should not drink, I can see the brewers and distillers not taking this too seriously - hardly worth commenting on - unlike the fizzy drink makers when faced with a ‘sugar tax’.

So we shall continue to have a glass of wine most evenings with our meal - it is part of the pleasure of the occasion. I cannot see men (and women) on the pull staying teetotal - part of the point of alcohol is to lower inhibitions. In realty of course booze has never been cheaper -and the culture in society has changed.

Moderation in all things should be the order of the day - except for those things which combine physical exercise with a release of energy - know what I mean?

Eventually something is going to kill you so why not enjoy it a little I say. I wonder if it's not the actual alcohol itself but the lifestyle that can come with it (late nights, partying, smoking, etc). And then you have to wonder what they're putting in it, if our food has chemicals I imagine our booze could too.

You are right about the lifestyle - and there are complex psychological and emotional issues too - as well as genetic aspects of getting disease. A little of what you fancy does you good!!!!!!

Well I still stick to the bible.. A little wine is good for the stomach. Although I suppose wine back then didn't have chemicals in it and was completely different.if you listened to them all you would be afraid to eat or drink anything.

Everyone has something. There are things everyone does that puts us at risk for DEATH and illness and whatnot. This is just another one of those things that I will choose to consume in moderation.
