Sad Hero in New Beginnings

I called my dad tonight to check on him. He sounds bad. I don’t think he’ll survive whatever he’s got. I’ll drive down to Eastman and take him to his biopsy next week. I’ll probably stay a day to make sure he’s fine.

Tonight at the gym, I was changing when a fellow gym patron unlocked his locker and found it empty. His clothes, keys, phone were all gone. He freaked. I suggested he go tell the manager and make sure his car wasn’t gone, and he agreed. After he left, I wondered if maybe he put his clothes in one locker, then mistakenly put his lock on another one. I checked the adjacent lockers, and found a white gym bag with a smaller black bag in one. He returned as I was exiting to find him. I stopped him and asked if his items consisted of the same items in that other locker. He said “yes”, and I directed him to that locker. He seemed to be eternally grateful, even if he felt a bit like a fool for his mistake. I realize I barely did anything, but it was fun to be the bearer of good and make someone’s night. The whole event was a much needed pick-me-up after my earlier conversation with Dad. I hope I get more encouraging experiences like that through this ordeal. I don’t know how I’ll get through it without them.
