I Can Do This Wednesday, May 23, 2007

I do believe it's time to discuss the changes that are taking form in my life.

I got my first job at age 16. By age 17 I was full time. I stayed at that job for 9 years. During my 9th year at that job (McDonalds) I started working at my current job. I quit McDonalds and stayed with this job for 6 years. I have not been unemployed since 1992. Now lets look at me now.

I am 31. I am unmarried. I am childless. And lastly, I am uneducated.

So, I have decided quit my job and go back to school. I have decided this for many reasons. First off, I love my job. However, I need more. With the job I have now, I will never be able to do the things I want to do. Being that I can't seem to keep a boyfriend I have decided it's time for me to put that on hold. I need to do something that I can control the outcome of. School seems like the perfect thing. I can easily go to school, study, and graduate with a degree. Well, maybe not easily but I control it. Not someone else. I need more in my life. I need to get a job that will pay me enough to buy a home so that I can get out of this apartment. I feel trapped and I need some freedom.

I have my finicial aid forms completed. I have signed up for a math class this term. (June 4th) That way I can be ready to go full time in the fall. Full time school starts August 23rd. I will sign up for them very soon. I am ready! Almost...

I haven't told my job yet. I am actually tossing thoughts about when and how to do it. I want so badly to stay on part time. (16 hours) However, I don't know if they are going to let me. They don't need a part timer. However, I am going to need the money to pay my cell phone bill, electric bill, and internet. I will continue to teach piano and clean offices. However, that's only 50 bucks a week total. I am going to need to eat and pay for gas to get to school... and parking! So I am going to ask (beg) to let me stay on part time. I don't know if I should tell them now or later? It's still 3 months away. However, I am going to have to find another job if they don't let me go part time. I live in Michigan. There are NO jobs here. It may take me 3 months to find one! Any suggestions on this is greatly appreciated.

Lastly, I am thinking about getting my associates degree in sonography. That would be taking ultra sounds. It's a hard course, but I know I can do it. I have no idea what else is available out there for an associates degree. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have taken very few college courses. I am very scared, but excited too. Litterly every night I lay down to sleep and say, "I can do this" about 10 times before I go to sleep. As soon as I quit my job there is no turning back. That makes me even more scared. However, I know I can do this.

I feel like I am about to jump off a bridge in a leap of faith! However, as I used to say when I was a kid, "if you tell yourself or someone something so many times, you (they) WILL start to believe it."

I CAN DO THIS.

phlebotomy is a quick course if you can stand blood. they make pretty good money. have you thought of maybe doing a tech school? lots of those have night courses and you can get finished in a little over a year. dont tell your job until you have to. congrats on the decision and good luck! I work with a guy whom I also went to college with. He is now 40 years old and got his degree in Mechanical Engineering 2 years ago.

Another guy is older than that and graduated this year.

It's never too late. :) [JKD Student] 5/26/2007 11:41:03 AM
Sonography is a great choice, highly in demand, bankers hours and the ability to go wherever you want. I wish I would have been a rad tech instead of a nurse. Don't worry about not meeting "milestones" (marriage, kids, etc)I wasted a lot of time sweating that kind of thing. Good luck! [nursechicrn] 5/27/2007 10:06:46 PM
oh yay! good for you! [ephemeral]
