Madilyn-- A True Story Tuesday, April 04, 2006
Madilyn is a fish, but not just any fish. She's the office fish at my work.
Today I was at work when I noticed Madilyn not swimming. Instead her face was facing the rocks and her tail was up towards the top of the tank. This wasn't all to uncommon because she will often pick up rocks with her mouth and spit them out. However, she began to float upside down. This concerned me so I went up to her tank for a closer look. What I discovered devastated me. Her mouth was open and she wasn't breathing! When I looked inside her mouth there was a rock jammed inside her mouth. She couldn't get it out. She had given up trying and was floating upside down! She was dying!
I was completely in shock. I immediatly took the lid off of the tank and reached in. I then stopped. I had no idea what to do next. I took my hand back out and ran to the phone. (no, I wasn't calling 911) I transfered my office phone to the answering service and closed the office. I ran home grabbed a tweezer and ran back. I kneeled down at the tank and put my hand in the tank. Being that Madilyn is a friendly fish, and hardly breathing, she swam into my hand. I grabbed her, she fought a little, then she calmed right down. I slowly insterted the tweezer into her mouth and tried to grab the rock. I grabbed onto it, but it wouldn't budge. I tried again and failed. It just wouldn't move. I took my arm back out of the tank so I could relax. I was really nervous. My eyes were watering and my nose was running. When I felt a little more relaxed I tried again. This time the fish swam right into my hand. I grabbed the rock and pulled lightly... then a little harder... then... stopped. It was really lodged. So next I closed the tweezer and tapped lightly on the rock. This time it moved. As soon as it moved I took the tweezer out of her mouth. I tapped just a little one more time and it moved back. I removed the tweezer and the rock was finally moved far enough back so it started going down her throat. However, she then "coughed" it out! Madilyns life was saved!
She immediately started breathing again... then went back to her duty of picking up rocks with her mouth.
Yeah!
