July 5, 2026
I got confused this year by the 4th of July fireworks situation.
First of all, the rooftop of my building has just about the sickest view of all of the downtown area. Sweeping from one side of the horizon to the other…spanning the river and the beautiful bridges and the towers and all of the highrises of the city center and off in the distance the fairgrounds with the giant ferris wheel and then the very south side of town and the movie studio and the highways and the trains. I mean, it’s a stunning view from up there.
So when I heard that there were two nights of fireworks displays and the Friday night one at the fairgrounds sounded like they were going to be the better ones because the Saturday night ones might get obstructed by the buildings downtown since they were going to be likely staying fairly low.
LONG STORY, but I made a big deal out of Friday night and [Athena] came over and so did one of my neighbors and I put a small spread out and we had some good chats and then went to wait…and wait…and wait until one of the World Cup games was over before the fireworks began.
And the bottom line was, they were super disappointing because the fairground fireworks were shot low as well, and they just weren’t spectacular.
Pretty much a dud.
Then Saturday night, well, I guess I didn’t realize that it was the BIG, BIG night for being up on the roof since we weren’t really going to be seeing a big fireworks show since it’d be blocked by the buildings.
BUT. The building had a pool party! And I didn’t realize it. Until I did.
So I went to the pool party (after some confusion about a wristband situation), and it was really fun! Had I known that they were providing food and drink I wouldn’t have had dinner, but all was fine. Everyone was festive.
The firework situation was really pretty cool in that we could see the entire skyline filled with fireworks from a 360-degree view, even though none of them were directly over us. It was still cool.
And when it was winding down, I ran into a guy I see occasionally walking his dogs and letting them out to do their business. They are scary dogs. Do you know the Cane Corso breed? I honestly get nervous around them, but their owner, let’s call him Pancho, is super cool and friendly, and I talk with him every time I see him.
Anway, Pancho and I got to talking, and while we were talking, it seemed like everyone who was on the rooftop (and there were probably a couple hundred people up there last night) knew him and were super friendly with him.
Pancho has lived in the building for about 15 years, and our time in this building overlapped by maybe a year or a little longer? But by the time I moved out I was practically living with Sexy Pants anyway, so I didn’t really remember him.
And as much as Pancho and I have recently talked, I didn’t know it until someone mentioned it…he’s a pretty famous artist in this city. Which impressed me to no end.
And something I said impressed him.
And before I knew it, we were exchanging numbers.
And now he’s been texting me and they’ve started to get flirty and I’m kind of freaking out.
Because I feel like doing anything with Pancho would be doing things that are over my head. Does that make sense? He’s a cool guy, but I can tell he has some connections with some potentially questionable entities, even though he is very well known and very well respected in the artist community.
I can’t explain it and I can’t put my finger on it, but I smell a certain kind of potential danger.
How do I keep this thing completely friendly?
Because this guy lives in the penthouse of the building and I have to pass by his place to get to the part of the rooftop that I love.
I can tell he is persistent and maybe even aggressive by his texts. I am not answering him right away, and honestly, I’d love to know him in a friendly way because he’s such a badass.
I suppose I just have to come out and say that, don’t I?
Anyway. The fireworks part of the party was fun. Talking to neighbors was great. I have more stories to tell about more of my neighbors!
I also went to see mom and dad today and that was pretty great, though every single visit makes me want to bawl my eyes out. We still had a really beautiful time together.
I do have to go. I have a HUGE week coming up and I want to wash my hair tonight so I don’t have to deal with it at all this week so I’m gonna close for now.
…and avoid Pancho for a while.
I love and miss you and wonder how your 4th went?
