My brother in Musings and Misgivings

I came across a picture today in my photo memories slideshow and it got me thinking.

The picture was taken outside a Pick-Up-Stix in Riverside, CA. nine or ten years ago. We were attending a grand re-opening event with my daughter, my mom, and the star attendee- my brother, Tim.

Tim was a journalist and editor at the Press Enterprise newspaper, and also had a cable access show with another editor that was akin to the Try Guys. Tim and his co-host would go around Riverside, trying new and unusual food, and then would create videos of their reactions. It was super neat.

At the time, my brother had gained notoriety, and was frequently recognized and approached in public by very enthusiastic “fans”.

This event was no different. He had been invited by the company to cover the re-opening, as they had been closed for MONTHS after a kitchen fire forced them to completely rehab the restaurant.

I can still remember how they made a big deal about my brother coming. They provided a lovely dinner with our favorite dishes, and we got pictures with their dragon mascot. They also included my mom in the festivities, as my brother had reported on his show that my mom was a big fan of their chicken egg rolls.

I can look back on memories like that and feel immense pride in my brother. He is so accomplished, and I admire his tenacity and creativity.

I was telling Rick about the memory, and my eyes began welling up in tears. I miss the good parts of my brother.

Unfortunately, we are currently no contact.

I turned to Rick and said, “I hope wherever he is, he is proud of all of the great things he has accomplished and experienced.”

Maybe one day, we will get back in touch, maybe we won’t. That doesn’t change how I remember him in the pleasant recollections.
