Medical Scare

It’s been a busy week, because the rabbit was in hospital. He stopped eating his normal food last Friday, so we started giving him emergency stasis medication. He was better over the weekend and then went back to not eating again on Monday, so we brought him to the hospital. He ended up needing IV drip starting Thursday (it’s cute to see a little IV line go into his little paw, and a cone of sham around his head so he can’t pull it out), and with the help of IV, managed to push out the, erm, obstruction in his gut, in the shape of mucusy poop. The vet says he’s back to 100% now, but we’ll have to keep giving him medication for an extra day and keep an eye on him.

We had given him fresh cilantro the day before he got sick, but he hadn’t had greens for months, so I’m guessing that’s the cause. His digestive system can’t handle the shock of fresh greens anymore.

When rabbits have untreated digestive problems, they could die in 2 days, so La Professure was worried the whole week. I was not terribly affected, however, not because I was sure he was going to pull through, but because I don’t think I’ll miss him if he didn’t. He’s just not particularly endearing. Henrietta the rat was always curious and brave, and always wants your company, but the rabbit is sociable only maybe 20% of the time, if that. Most of the time he avoids humans. So I just don’t feel a connection to him.

Or I’m just a heartless psychopath.

The friends test

Last weekend when we thought the rabbit was doing better, we had lunch with the ENT pianist and his new girlfriend at Port Washington, where she lives. We like her a lot more than the previous partners - she is more engaging, more settled, and smarter. She is interested in what we do and she does interesting things that we want to learn about. She’s a consultant for a business thinktank (even though she keeps claiming to be dumb, which is a sign she’s not), and has done interesting things in her life.

I usually roll my eyes a bit when people say “so-and-so is our people”, but La Professeure and I said exactly that when we were driving away. ENT pianist has married 3 times now, but we’re hopeful this one has staying power.

Maybe because she’s not American (she’s Australian).

The key to success is low expectations

Yesterday I went to the concert of our amateur musician group’s orchestra. It’s I think the third time we hold it in this church because the rent is cheap enough that we won’t turn out at a loss. But the ENT pianist had asked me to send multiple mass-emails this week reminding people of the concert, so I wonder if the ticket sales are really bad.

I wasn’t holding much expectations going in, but I had a nice time. I politely turned down requests to help out with the concert (I didn’t know I was going to be able to go, with the rabbit’s health being uncertain), so didn’t have any obligations. So this time I noticed how dark the church was, and the peeling paint on the wall, and the tinny-sounding piano.

I was half expecting an empty church, but it turned out to be better attended than I thought. There are about 20 orchestra members, and each brought about 3-4 people to the concert, so there were a good 60-80 people in attendance. A fair few of the pews were still empty, but at least it wasn’t as empty as I’d feared. I didn’t get to meet a lot of people, but there were a fair few members who came - the Jazz pianist, and the accordion player, and I’m sure there are more sitting on the level (I sat at the balcony).

The performance was better than I’d thought. I think they sounded better than the first time I heard them (back then, I struggled to stay awake, but this time I didn’t). There were cringey mistakes here and there, but nothing stood out. One of the best pianists in the group is a pediatric dentist, with the initial K.Z., so in my head I have always referred to him as Kinderzahnarzt, and he performed the Cezar Frank symphonic variations with the orchestra, which was pretty bland as compositions go, but he certainly elevated the music.

I’m supposed to record the soundtrack of a movie score that the concertmistress has written. We’re recording next Saturday, but we haven’t been able to reach the violist. I hope she is okay. With this concert out of the way, I’ll guess the concertmistress would get on the recording project.
