Holy schmoley! It’s been a whole week since I’ve written?? WTF?
I last left you last Wednesday with one more day to pack and then the move was on Friday.
So, Thursday was rough. I was honestly less packed than I thought I was. I have made a discovery that I’m surprised I didn’t realize before because I’ve moved many, many, many times in my lifetime. But this time for whatever reason, I saved my kitchen packing for last. I think I thought I could spend the last few days cleaning out my refrigerator by eating everything that was left in there and then packing up all the dishes and stuff afterwards.
Honestly, that was the wrong move. I think you should have all of your kitchen stuff packed closer to the beginning of the process, right? It’s the hardest thing to pack because there are so many little things!
Regardless, I was up until around 1am packing and then I decided to get a little bit of shut eye because I had to. I decided to get up around 4:30am to do the final-final stuff and sweep the floors around me. The movers had called to tell me that they were going to be there at 7am. First thing!
So imagine my surprise when I still wasn’t quite finished packing at 6am and I got a phone call telling me that they, the movers, were 15 minutes away! Oof.
But that just made me move my hiney even faster!
They got the truck packed pretty lickety split and they took off before me. I had to finish up some things and give my maintenance guy a huge hug for taking such good care of me (and Martini…she loooovvvvedd Jose!).
And then it was the 3.5 hour drive back to [Former-Now-Current City]!
The move-in was a little more tricky.
We’re dealing with a giant, massive, old, old, old warehouse building that’s been converted to loft spaces, but still has so many quirks. Sooooo many things I’d forgotten about since living in an easy-peasy apartment complex where I just drive up to my garage, pull in, and walk right up to my front door.
Here, it’s much more complicated, and there are a lot of steps involved. Let’s just say that the movers weren’t super happy. There were a lot of steps they needed to take - especially since the freight elevator is on the other side of the building.
And this building is nearly Vegas hotel-sized. Been getting my step quota in every day! I think I got 26,000 steps on moving day!
They did an okay job, I guess. The lead guy was cocky and not as good as the last team I had with this company. I’d asked for that guy again, but they sent me this motherfucker. He and his team of two other guys were fine. Not great. Lackadaisical. But I felt obligated to tip them decently because of the extra steps they had to take with my space.
Once they left, I let out a big sigh and kinda got to work. But I was tired, so I didn’t do a lot.
And I still haven’t done a ton, ha.
Because I’ve had to start working full time with the big commute and all that jazz.
It’s been a huge change. I’d forgotten what it’s like to live in a big, old building while holding down a big, old job and driving to and from the big, old city. It’s a HUGE CHANGE!
I have so much more to write, but I’m tired and I gotta get up and do the grind again in the early morning. Here’s a tease of some things I want to tell you about since the BIG MOVE. I have been jotting down little notes in my phone for when I can get to them. Here’s what I wrote:
- This building is HAUNTED!
- Burping the loft
- SO MUCH LIGHT! But filtered by dirty windows (leasing guy says they clean 2x/year, but it looks like years - must get on that!)
- Meeting a new, sweet neighbor in the parking lot, stopping to chat, and realized that we talked for an hour!
- So many dogs in the building! Some big-ass scary looking dogs! And some little babies like my Martini ❤️
- There’s a gospel church service on my floor on Sunday mornings!
- Saturday morning, walked on the city trail and was IMMEDIATELY approached by a man who walked and talked with me for two hours!
- At work, I talked to a guy I knew from years ago. I told him I was struggling with the printer, so he walked me over to the machine and told me that he’s followed me on social media for years since I’d left the company, and always thought of me as a “CEO-type” and how it surprised him to think that I was having “normal” struggles with the printer 😅
- Yesterday, I went to a retirement luncheon for a guy I used to work with back in the old days. So weird to see my peer retire just as I’m getting back to that office. I don’t know how I feel about that!
- Last night, after a 7pm conference call with China, I went down to the community area where they were having a networking event for residents who have businesses in the building. * I met a guy who sells perfumed oils and bought two bottles while talking to another neighbor, Coco, who has two sweet dogs who love Martini. I’ve always said this is a built-on community.
- Also met my neighbor from 2-doors down last night. He’s kinda sexy.
And there’s so much more, but I’m super tired and I gotta go to bed.
I’m moving swiftly from having too much time on my hands to not enough time in the day. When the pendulum swings for me, it swings HARD and FAST!!
More soon!
