Squirrel Girl in Musings and Misgivings

The macaw two rooms away is squawking obscenities at Rick as he attempts to wash dishes. He wants Rick’s attention, but we try to not encourage the bad language. We typically ignore him when he starts up with the repetitive F words as loud as a macaw can scream. He eventually calms down and will quietly sing songs to himself. He’s super cool, but even after two years, I still fear for my fingers when I am close to his cage.

K lets him out occasionally to sit on an outside perch and get gently hosed off. But largely, the only person he comes into regular contact with is K. He prefers men. He ADORES Rick. He likes the attention I give him, but truly would prefer I bug off lol.

He’s comedic relief, for sure. I will be in the living room, and can hear Max giving himself commands, “Do the eagle!” It’s hilarious when he’s not being an absolute menace and screaming his head off.

One of the twin black cats is FINALLY getting used to having me around again. The twins are really cautious. I have known them for two years, and last night, the male, Nandor, snuck into bed after I was asleep and took up a spot curled into the backs of my legs right below my butt. I woke up at around 2 and asked Rick, who was still awake reading, who was sleeping on me, and he said, “One of the dark ones”. I think that should be their collective nickname, “The Dark Ones”. Nandor and Nadja. Makes perfect sense to me.

I have made it my mission to befriend animals before, and the surefire way to make it happen is to take your time. Don’t approach. Sit calmly in their vicinity, but do not make eye contact. Don’t reach your hand out for them to sniff. Just SIT. Eventually if you don’t approach aggressively, and you go at THEIR pace, they’ll come around.

It’s the same tactics I used to befriend wild squirrels. Now everywhere we go, if there are squirrels, I will make friends.

I am not sure what I am going to do today. I have fed the macaw, folded laundry, restarted a load I forgot in the washer, I washed a couple of dishes, tidied up, and did minimal self care. Rick left after 9 to go to the apartment to work on his projects.

I am going to try to relax and maybe do something creative. Easy peasy dinner planned, grilled cheese on olive bread, and tomato soup. I keep getting distracted, and forget to submit this, so I am going to do that now before I get called away again.

I hope you are all having a good week.
