The Card in When you feel unsure

In flight school, each student had to write a card to the following student who was in fight school behind them. I never did get a chance to write that card because I was drunk in Cincinnati, but here’s the card I would’ve wrote :

If you’re reading this, I am truly proud of you for making it this far.

Unlike many cards that will say things just to make you feel good about being here, I want to tell you how to make your time here actually count — in a way that changes you when you walk out of this experience.

Want to hear something funny? I was the girl who failed twice. I used all my lifelines before the second half of class. I didn’t know a thing about planes when I arrived. I got warnings for things that honestly reflected parts of who I was at the time.

And yet… I wouldn’t change a thing. It made me who I am now.

One thing I will tell you: be situationally aware. Every night, ask yourself three questions:

 • Did I do everything I possibly could today?

 • Am I proud of my actions?

 • Can I go to sleep in peace before tomorrow’s class?

If you ask yourself those questions consistently, you’re taking control of your journey.

If you’re still enough to notice, you’ll realize this isn’t just aircraft training. It’s life training.

People will tell you how to do things — but in the quiet moments, ask yourself:

Did I make today count?

And if the answer is yes… keep going.

You’ve got this.
