6 hours at the ER later.... in A new beginning

So Lilly had been stuffed up just a little bit since Sunday. The night before last she seemed more congested so the past couple nights she was just up crying every half hour to hour and moaning because she couldn’t breathe. This morning I woke up and her breathing was very rapid. So quick that it scared me. She was so lethargic too but I had to get to work and figured I would let both her and Jesse rest a little bit and then call the doctor for an appointment. Spoke with a nurse and she said that they didn’t have any appointments for today and that it sounded like she was in distress and to take her to the nearest ER. So I called Jesse and that’s what we did. They didn’t like the sounds of her lungs or the looks of her breathing so they ordered a chest xray, gave her an oral dose of steroids and a couple nebulizer treatments. Her xray ended up being normal but her breathing would not slow down. They wanted to admit her. At this point we had been there for 6 hours and neither of us had slept and we all just wanted to go home. Lilly was so good throughout the whole thing. The nebulizer treatments and steroids definitely made a difference and they said that if we agreed to give her neb treatments strictly every 4 hours at home until her follow up appointment with her pediatrician tomorrow we could go home. Also that if her breathing got any worse to return to the ER. Of course we opted for that. It was so sad hearing her say I want to go home over and over again but she actually was smiling the whole time and did so good. So good in fact Santa gave her a present early. haha

Her little inhaler is so sad looking though. Has little bears on the side. I just gave her, her first treatment and will repeat again at 9 pm, 1 am, 5 am etc. until her appt at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon. I may go into work tomorrow until her appointment but I haven’t decided yet. I of course would rather stay home with her but I am getting the same cold and know I am probably going to feel like her one of these days and need to stay home. They also are pretty sure she has asthma but didn’t want to diagnose her without her primary seeing her first. Depending on how that appointment goes and how she responds to the treatments she may wind up back in the hospital being admitted tomorrow and I am praying that doesn’t happen.

So think positive thoughts she improves dramatically and we don’t have to spend a night in the hospital.

The arguably-sad thing is that some insurance plans waive the fee for going to the ER if you wind up getting admitted, on the theory that you legitimately needed to be there. Depending on the terms, it can actually be cheaper to be admitted than treated and sent home....

Hope she feels better, and that your plan treats her kindly!
