M is SO excited about this :) She had a friend sleep over about 8 months ago for the first time and really, they were just WAY too young for it! They were too excited that they barely listened to anything we said the whole time. It’s not that they didn’t listen, they didn’t even HEAR us!! Lol. I assume there is a level of normality in this, but honestly, they weren’t mature enough to actually follow instructions anyway. Thinking about this, I can see that M has developed so many skills in the last 8 months and really matured! She takes it in her stride now if things don’t go the way she wants them to, rather than try to stubbornly manipulate the situation. ANYWAY, after this sleepover 8 months ago, M started asking almost every weekend if she could have someone sleep over. In the end I got so sick of this that I told her she couldn’t have any more sleep overs until she was 7. And that was when her own idea for a sleepover party for her 7th birthday was born! Ever since then she’s been talking about who she would invite and so on. It almost drove me mad!!! But then after a while she stopped (I think our trip to Chile in June was a nice distraction, as well as the Frozen movie lol). Lately though, we’ve been really planning things, such as which games to play (a first for me). I got her to pick which cake she’d like. She wants a dolphin cake. The dolphin is her favourite animal. Thankfully I found an easy recipe online. Basically you bake two cakes and then it’s just a matter of following their pattern to cut out the cakes into a dolphin puzzle and then putting the pieces together! M also helped me start on a piñata. They’re always fun, especially at this age. We only did one layer together and then she got bored. I haven’t done the other layers lol. It’s all very exciting :) I think that birthdays have always been exciting, but now that she’s entered middle childhood, the excitement has entered a whole new level, too! I can see she feels big and that her opinions are valid (which they always are), and I can see she is all the more happy for her place in this world to make her own decisions about her own party :) She even started to list which games to play WHEN, but then I said I’d choose that, as I know they’ll be in the pool too. I know that if I were to let her say WHEN to play these games, she’d become so focused on this on the day that she’d miss out on actually enjoying her party. Ahhh my lovely, wonderful girl. The other night, for the first time, she wrote in an exercise book that I bought her recently to doodle in. She wrote, “M is…” in the middle of the page, and then she drew all these stems coming out from them (like a brainstorm session) and on each stem she wrote something different.
kind
brown eyed
brown haired
good
fair
caring
loving
I LOVE that these concepts are really starting to take shape for her!! I love so much that this reflects where her self-esteem is at these days!! I LOVE how well she knows herself, too, and I love that she is using her writing skills to write about herself. It shows that she is getting to know herself too. About two months ago, she filled her drawers with stickers and also started a little collage on her wall in her room. Part of it says, “Welcome to my room! M is the best!!”
She is seriously awesome.
