Well, I finally have a conclusion regarding the job I’ve been writing about for the past three or four entries.
I read your notes about how ironic it would be if I did get a call-back from the company, and lo and behold, yesterday afternoon my phone rang! I could see it was the HR manager. She was calling me back to tell me that the company wanted me to move to the next step - the panel interview…
Except she wasn’t!!
She was actually calling me to tell me that the hiring manager had heard everything I said after she disconnected from the call…and then she heard a gigantic belch followed by me looking at the screen in horror because I hadn’t logged off properly!!
Except she didn’t say that either!
Okay, okay. The HR manager truly did call. But she only told me that these jobs are so few and far between and they only come around every so often, and that the competition was fierce and yada yada. The hiring manager decided she wanted to move forward with another candidate.
But I thought it was soooooo interesting that the HR manager was calling me directly! Like, that never really happens in this day and age of ghosting and form rejection emails, right?!
And then the really weird thing is that this HR manager wanted to chat and chat for a long time on the phone? It was weird.
So I asked her a bunch of questions:
-
Did you get any feedback from the hiring manager as to WHY she decided she was going with another candidate?
-
Was there anything I could have done better (or not done, heh) in my interview that would have put me in a better position for this role?
-
WHAT DID THE BITCH SAY???
And the HR manager said that no, she didn’t get actual feedback from the hiring manager, but she was going to ask and get back to me.
And then she said that there are roles opening up all the time (I actually haven’t seen that to be true, but I do know that there are big initiatives happening at the company that might open up another role), and that she has all of my information and will be in touch.
I then asked her if I could have a way of contacting her if I see something, and she gave me her phone number and told me to text her anytime.
HOW strange does that seem to you?? Like, do HR managers DO THAT? For someone who is NOT moving forward with a job opening??
This company has me so confused. I still need to let it go, but it definitely felt like closure…while leaving the door cracked. ‘
I guess I’ll leave it at that.
Meanwhile, I’ve got this contract gig, the 6-month thing, still dangling out there. The company wants me to fly to Tupelo, MS to visit another company who is interested in me working on this project. It’s a big deal since I’m the only one among this whole group who understand the market they are looking to enter. The pay is NOT great, but maybe I can convince them otherwise while I’m in Tupelo…of all places.
I have a fourth video call with these guys this morning. This time, to be introduced to the VP of Merchandise. All of this work for NO PAY so far. I do not like the freelance/contract/consultant baloney. It’s a ton of upfront for a little outcome. I need to get this squared away.
Anyway, that’s what’s going on these last couple of days.
Oof.
Off I go to start my day.
xox,
GS
