LIFE: NOW WITH EVEN MORE WAYS TO BREAK YOUR HEART
(For R. For K.)

Even though she has already moved out,
the light on her side of the couch
where she used to read at night,
is still named after her
in your house’s Alexa
One night, while visiting, I hear you tell
the system to shut off your ex’s light
I ask if you haven’t thought
about possibly renaming the light
but you don’t answer
Maybe you don’t want to change it
Maybe you don’t know how
Or maybe there’s something painfully poetic
about calling her absence by name
and watching your world go dark.
