由奢入儉難
We closed on our old house yesterday. It’s nice to get some liquid asset back. The closing itself was quite easy; as a seller we had less documents to sign. However, La Professeure went there on Saturday to do a last minute cleaning, and discovered a leak in the kitchen sink, so I had to go out there in the afternoon to clean up the leak and put a drip pan down. But it turned out not to be a big deal; the trap had a crack in it just above the water line, so as long as no one runs the faucet there won’t be water coming out. She got a plumber to fix it on Monday, and everything was fine on the final walk-through Tuesday.
But, last Sunday was the last time I was in that house. My first thought was how surprisingly small it felt, and how we managed to survive there for 11 years. When we moved it I thought it was more space than we needed. Even when we lived there, I felt like there was more space than we needed. It only took 2 months living in the new house to make me get used to having the space.
It is alarming how easily one gets used to luxury.

The never-ending chores
Now that our closing is done, we have a number of chores to attend to and we lost our excuse to put it off. Mostly about scheduling appointments or doctors: for my heart, eye, butt, tooth, piano. Going to doctor appointments is becoming a full-time job.
Thanksgiving is next week, and La Professeur’s parents are visiting. They are coming on Sunday, so we only have one more day to get this house ready to receive guests.
This forced us to take care of the “long tail” items, stuff that are not necessary for day-to-day living, but make the house nicer to live in. So we have been more busy the last few days than we have been in weeks.
Nothing motivates like having a deadline.

Another one
We had our Carnegie Hall concert last Saturday. I went into the city early to see a play the Schnookie’s school’s drama club put on. It was Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, and I was very impressed by the production value. Schnookie has a great range too. But the best mode was angry. Somehow it does not surprise me that Schnookie is a drama nerd.
I only got enough time to say hi to her on the way out because I had to get to Carnegie Hall for the soundcheck. I’d done it so many times now I expected to be bored - I brought a database paper with me to read backstage. But I didn’t need to; there was a lot of socialising to do, especially since about half of the people there were new to our group. The camaraderie is one of the best part about our group.
The concert has 3 parts, the first one was the orchestra playing Mozart 40 - I was mostly impressed by how many people they could squeeze on to the stage (it was about 25 piece). Then we played in the second part. I turned pages for the group before me, which I always welcome, because I would have already been on stage when I played. And the flautist and soprano did very well - they were more in synch at the cadenza than they’d every been. What I remember most was how nice the Steinway was to play. Sounds is beautiful, powerful when you want it, and so responsive. It almost made me want to audition to play a solo there again.
Bu the most remarkable thing is that, I have almost forgot that it happened until our Soprano texted pictures to us.
