In the year 2024, thus far, I have been a Bathroom Reader.

I have since read it is not good to sit on the Commode very long but I find I get my best reading there. For one, it could lead to hemorrhoids among a few other things. One site says you shouldn’t be there longer than 10 minutes and another says 5.

I often sit there anywhere from 5 minutes to? Well however it takes to read a few pages and or the Chapter.

I have a book in the upstairs Bathroom and one in the downstairs Bathroom but none in the Master Bathroom.

It seems it is the only time I take the time to read. Thus far in 2024 I have read 6 books.

  1. American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
It is a story of a Woman and her son’s Journey in Mexico fleeing from the Cartels. There is Murder, Fear and Determination. She was fleeing Mexico with people who were fleeing for various other reasons looking for a better life in America.
(Historical Fiction Book- 646 pages (large print)
    – A Quote from the Book- “These people leave their homes, their cultures, their families, even their languages, and venture into tremendous peril, risking their very lives, all for the chance to get to the dream of some faraway country that doesn’t even want them.”

  2. 12 years a Slave by Henry Gates and Ira Berlin.
Solomon was a free man. He had a Wife and Kids. He was asked to help out with something and was tricked and sold into Slavery. His Papers stole from him. He wasn’tt able to get anyone to believe that he was a free man. For 12 years he lived as a Slave going from one owner to the next. Being mistreated along the way.
I started reading the book in December but then got side-tracked. I finished it in January and then attempted to see the DVD. I could not watch it long. It INFURIATED ME! This was so very wrong! What a different reading it and trying to watch it. I don’t know how people sat through it in the Movie Theater.
    (Non-Fiction- 240 pages)
    – A quote from the Book- “I will not fall into despair! I will keep myself hardy until freedom is opportune!”

  3. The Four Winds by Hannah Kristin
It is a story of a family living through the Dust Bowl. The dad takes off for a better life in CA and she stays behind with his parents. Eventually to goes to CA too. A Single Mom with kids trying to survive and enduring the harsh treatment from those who lived there before her.
This story made me want to research about the Dust Bowl further.
    (Historical Fiction- 464 pages)
–A Quote from the Book- “Life is tough. You need to be tougher or it will turn you inside out.”

  4. Fairyland (A Memoir of my Father) by Alysia Abbott
It is a story about a Gay Father raising his daughter. His Wife died when their child was a baby. He was constantly looking for love and was an addict and often depressed. The child grew up in that atmosphere. Eventually he got AIDS and as a young adult she cared for him.
The daughter pieced this story together from her memory and from the many journals he had kept and from some of his friends.
It caused me to watch some You Tube Speaking engagements of the Daughter sharing part of her life.
    (Non-Fiction- 326 pages)
    – A Quote from the Book- The College aged daughter told him that she didn’t think she was up to caring for him and he guilted her by saying. “I wasn’t ready to care for you when your mother died, but I did it”
    – He also had a Note in his journal when she was about 15 full of attitude-
“Maybe it is normal for teens to be rude, sullen and rebellious, but I don’t particularly care to be around it. In-fact I hardly have the energy to govern or properly love myself, let alone the on added tension”

  5. When Breath becomes Air by Paul Kalanith
It is a story of a man who becomes a DR. He shares about his Residency and all his Hands On experiences in a little of this and that until he chose what he wanted to be.. A Neurosurgeon. Just as he was nearing his Residency he learned he had a Terminal Cancer in his 30’s. He writes about moving forward even though and of the child they chose to have. He pretty much finished his book up until his death, his wife (who is also a DR.) wrote the epilogue. She has since done some Speaking Engagement on the Book.
    (Non-Fiction- 228 pages)
    – A quote from the Book, “Even if I am Dying, until I actually die, I am Living”

  6. Biking Across America by Paul Stutzman
Paul’s wife had died several years back. A few years prior to the Bike Ride he walked the Appalachian Trail. And then he did this Bike ride from Northern Washington State to Southern Florida.. over 4000 miles. It was interesting reading that there is a whole community of Bike Riders out there. He talks about his Divine Opportunities of sharing about Jesus along the way. Such an enjoyable read!
    (Non-Fiction- 222 pages)
    – A Quote from the Book- “Life is all about seizing the day, plan for the future, but not at the expense of missing all the joys and blessings in our lives today”

Now I am just starting two more books.
7. Downstairs Bathroom- Summer at Tiffany by Margorie Hart (N/F)
8. Upstairs Bathroom- Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah (HF)

(When the Summer comes, I will add another Location (The Backyard) for reading in addition to the two Restrooms.
