Amateurs
I’m now upstate with the in-laws now to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday. This is the continuation of the summer where we have social obligations many weekends in a row.
On Bastille day, the old Treasurer organized a play-in. It was a Friday and I hadn’t planned on going into the office, but I did for the play-in. It was pretty well-attended, I think in total about a dozen people showed up and half of us played something. I played some Satie Cabaret songs, and accompanied a singer from the amateur group doing Poulenc, and I also accompanied a new mezzo who sang and Hahn… but I had to transpose it on the spot because I was used to playing for Sopranos. It was a fun night, and there were new people who joined. So hopefully they will perform at the amateur group and/or Treasurer’s outreach concerts.
I like this community aspect of amateur musicians groups; it’s almost a social club.

Social Obligations
The Saturday after Bastille day, we went to Rheinback to visit La Professerue’s colleague. We’d thought about going to Hudson valley this summer for a few days (but changed our plans to Montauk), but now we do get to spend some time there. They have a nice condo, and showed us hiking spots around. The place and they remind me a lot of Flautist #1’s home, also in upstate new york. There are many nerdy intellectual city-dweller types that moved to the Hudson valley populating the art and music scene. The place was very hot, though; we were tired when we came back. The 2 ½ hour drive each way didn’t help.
Then the next Saturday we went to a trio of open houses in Bellerose Village. I hadn’t considered that area because it’s so small and not on anyone’s radar. But We quite like the area. Out of the three houses, only one is a possibility, but it would require a lot of work - the garage needs to be converted back to car storage, the sidings and railing need replacing, and it doesn’t have central AC. Probably more work than its worth, but it does make us hopeful we will find something. I’m hoping we can find something during the off season.
Then on Sunday went to Comack to see La Professeor’s sister-in-law’s father, who has a tumor in his brain and is staying in a rehab. We were told he has good day and bad days, and when we visited it was a bad day. He is not unresponsive or confused or losing his memory, it was just that he gets fixated on one thing (this time it’s him needing help seeing a computer - even though there isn’t a computer for him to use) and wanted only to talk about that. But the facility is nice, and we had a nice visit with his family - our visit really was more about showing up for the family than for him. We then went to see La Professeure’s behaviourial scientist coworker at Farmingville and his new Thai wife and step child. The kid is cute; it’s amazing how good his English is even though he’s only been in the states for weeks.
And now we are upstate; my mother-in-law’s sisters just arrived from Omaha and Denver today, so they’ll be staying till next week.
It has just been a lot of social visits.
