Adventures in Cooking in New Beginnings

I realize recipes scale in difficulty. I'm actually trying to make something new at least every two weeks, preferably every week. It doesn't have to be immaculate. I merely want to claim that I ate something that I made myself, not from a restaurant or prepackaged from Kroger.
Case in point, I successfully added banana pudding to my repertoire a couple of weeks ago. This week, I decided to try replicate cheddar bay biscuits like they serve at Red Lobster. Man alive! Who would have ever thought the jump from pudding to biscuits would be so steep.
My first batch I made Sunday night turned out to be a bust. I ran out of mixing bowls, so I had to make do with a regular bowl I eat out of. It was just barely able to contain the milk and butter I was whisking together without sloshing all over the counter. I dumped the milk and butter concoction onto the dry ingredients when I realized I measured the former for twice as many bisquits as the latter, so I had to double the flour, pepper, sugar, etc. I already measured. I mixed everything together and scooped onto a baking pan. Unfortunately, I overloaded the pan not giving enough room between each biscuit. What came out looked like a pock marked mega biscuit. Even that wouldn't have been so bad, had I not over baked it. The bottom(s) was burned, and the top(s) would separate when I tried to remove them from the baking pan. Not only that, but I forgot to buy a basting brush, so I wasn't able add the topping of butter, garlic, and parsely at the very end. At least what I ate tasted good. It's a shame that the actual process of eating it was so cumbersome that I decided to throw the rest away.
I tried the recipe again tonight. I went to Kroger before, and I was sure I had everything I needed before I started. Only I could be dumb enough to forget to add the cheddar when making cheddar bay biscuits. Thankfully, I caught my error before I put them in the oven. I tried to correct by putting the cheese on top of the biscuits, but they didn't turn out as intended. I also think I didn't bake them quite long enough; their bottoms are a bit too soft. I'd like to try again this weekend, but I think I need a respite from failure. At least what came out of the oven tonight is closer to what it should have been. Any progress is positive, right?
