It was always going to be a lazy day. I made the mistake of trying to work half the day. There was a little bit of work to wrap up before I can give it to the new guy, though he is taking a week and a half off as well, so al in all there will be only one week when he is around and I am not.

So I wrapped up some code review comments in the morning and proceeded to do nothing but wait for the airport shuttle to pick us up. I did walk to the Burger King for lunch though because La Professeure was not feeling like going out to get food. That meant I walked 30 minutes in the mid-day sun and had to get a shower before I would go on a 18 hour journey, door-to-door.

1:45pm New York time, the shuttle arrived on time to pick us up. But then it went to La Guardia to drop off other passengers, so when we got to JFK, it was already...

3:10pm New York time. It was 10 minutes later than our "supposed" arrival time (our flight was at 6pm so we should have been there 3 hours early to checkin because it's an international flight). But that didn't matter because security line was exceptionally smooth. There was hardly a line at all!

I spent the extra time watching Match of The Day World Cup from the night before. Even though I had seen the USA-Belgium game at my company's viewing party the day before, it is always nice to hear the expert commntary.

5pm New York time. Boarded the plane. But we had to sit on the tarmac for an hour because there was a storm gathering and the controller was working out the logistics of letting planes take off. On the ground we couldn't actually tell the weather was bad; it just looked a bit dark.

6pm New York time. Flight took off an hour late, but because of tail wind, it was going to arrive at Amsterdam on time anyway. I really like the in-flight entertainment system now; everybody get to peronalize their choice of movie, TV, or games on their own screen. So, even though the first leg was 6 hours long, it didn't feel that long. Especially since I was watching the Lego Movie and Captain America.

Because we were flying east, against the direction of the sun, the sun set and sun rise happened very quickly. By 8pm it was still light out, but by 12am, 4 hours later the sun had set and had risen again already.
