Icicles and Angels in These Foolish Things

Where to even start?
I’m still unpacking - that’s kind of a given. But now I’m trying to unpack without any power on in The Place. My apartment was in the path of the Big Winter Storm of 2023. Seems like I get caught in something like this every year! Do you remember when I was supposed to have my cancer surgery in 2021? Yep, another HUGE storm!
This time it was the ICE that downed all of the power lines in many areas of [My New City], and as of 5:55am yesterday, there have been no lights on in The Place. And it’s freezing outside!
But as luck would have it, or the fact that I have guardian angels, Martini and I are in a safe, dry, warm place. And if you want to know the REAL story, it’s actually thanks to the power of online journaling…and ProseBox!
That’s right, PB’s very own [ylime], along with her dog Athena, came to my rescue - literally - and swooped me up at The Place and took Martini and me to her own place! We have been followers of each other on PB, but had never met before…until late yesterday afternoon!
And you know what?
Nobody can say when we’ll have power again at my apartment complex. Not the city utilities, not the mayor, not the city manager. NO ONE. Yet [ylime] has graciously offered to let me stay here through the weekend! I seriously hope to not have to do that, but I’m seriously grateful that I have a warm place to sleep.
This woman is a gem. I am so grateful.
And I’m so glad I write here. It’s so interesting how we can make our online presence part of our real lives.
Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer. All of the ice is melting or has already melted off. I will go back to The Place tomorrow to continue unpacking and hopefully the power will be fixed and we’ll have a warm home again. Fingers crossed. We’ll see.
But I’m so happy to know that I have a friend like this here in [My New City].
Warmly,
GS

Crazy the winter stuff going on in your area. We have barely had a winter here at all!

I am so glad you got rescued and that the two of you got to meet each other. The people I read here become like family to me because I have read them for so long and we have shared so much . Take care, keep warm and Pat Martini for me !

It’s a miracle. We know each other better than offline friends at times. Someone wrote decades ago that we even know the frequency of hospital appointments of each other. It is still true.

It's SO true! I think this is why I feel comfortable meeting people from PB in person. I knew who Ylime was in an instant and I already knew so much about her. We didn't have ANY awkward get-to-know-you questions or anything!

There's something very cool about having this sort of constellation of protofriends we haven't met yet. And wonderful that you could lean on that.
