Need ring advice in Northern Lights

Okay, I am way too busy to read or write regularly here, but I do need to crowdsource some ideas and I really don't want to discuss this on Facebook.

Ethan and I are doing the w-word thing in September. It is shaping up fine. It is going to be super casual and laid back and I think it should be a lot of fun. That's all fine.

But I cannot figure out what to do for rings (I think I do actually want a ring, and Ethan wants one - it will possibly be the single most traditional thing we do for this), mostly just because I'm not willing to shell out the bucks it seems to cost to get something that is officially deemed a wedding band.

Here are my criteria:

  • Under $500 per ring
  • NO diamonds/gemstones/etc.
  • NOT from a traditional jewelry store that sells lots of expensive wedding crap; I absolutely despise the commercial jewelry industry and I won't support it with my dollars (I would seriously sooner not get married than give a jewelry store my money)
  • Durable - nothing that is one metal plated over another, where the top metal wears away over time; I need this to last
  • Preferably something that includes both silver-colored and gold-colored metals, since that is easier to match with stuff (I am all about versatility, oh yes I am)

Brilliant ideas? So far my ideas are antique stores, pawn shops (only that seems kind of icky), and a custom jewelry designer. The only one of these I have explored so far is a custom designer - and he quoted me $1000-1500/ring, so, no, that's not happening.

Help me. I know absolutely nothing about jewelry/where you buy it, so I'm hoping there are options I haven't thought of.

Thanks in advance.
