Our daffodils started a few weeks back, but they are full on now. This one is from the community garden today. My starts all survived my going away expecting rain when none came. Good for the beach, not so good for the garden.
Saw my first iris bloom of the year in the neighborhood and the four ornamental pears out front are in full bloom. Yesterday it was warm, and the cherry trees along the river front are in bloom. When Mrs. Sherlock drove me home from the train station in the late afternoon there were a gazillion people out enjoying them.
More maskless people than I have seen in a long time.
I was telling my class this morning that the best thing about going away is having been away. It is good, righteous, and good to get out and about and do something different, but it is sweet to come home rested and rejuvenated after.
One notices the subtle comforts that one takes for granted being home all the time. Like not having to wait hardly at all for the water to get hot. And one’s sleeping arrangements that have been subtly designed over time for what works exactly for us. It is home.
Thinking of how many people do not have homes to return to makes it more poignant still.
A pilot program of street response teams that responds to non-emergency mental health issues goes live across the city today. We so need this. Each team has a firefighter paramedic, a mental health crisis therapist and two community health workers. 90% of the calls would have been previously responded to by armed police based on the pilot so this is good news.
There is so much to do. This city is a mess. We lost population in the last few years. No surprise there. We should know soon what kind of changes to city government the Charter Commission will recommend for the November ballot.
I downloaded a fun app called “Clock Yourself”. It costs $2.00. It provides skills training for balance and mental agility as well.
This morning I had a Telemedicine call with my cardiologist. He reviewed my meds and my recent test results and I have clear instructions on what to do for now with the angina I have been having this year. The good news is no more tests for now and they are all good with the meds I am taking so the plan is to carry on.
That means my femoral artery is safe from intrusion for the time being. Yay.
My hair is thinning though. When I vacuumed before the trip there was as much of my hair in there as cat hair. I knew my ponytail was less thick, but I had no idea how much hair I was losing. The scrunchies that I have been using since pandemic grow out, have now been banished.
Part of it is aging, but part of it is the folly that I could wear my older hair like a much younger woman would. I hope with a soft brush, a soft touch, clips that don’t pull and a learned tolerance for wearing my hair down (and loose-fitting breathable hats when I can’t) that I will get some grow back.
Kes says I will adapt and get used to it. I hope I can do that too.
I got a new set of massage balls. As well as yoga nidra (deep relaxation or the yoga of sleep) I am going to try to work on all kinds of release this year.
As well as asking for help.
Having the garden plot available and the starts in is so exciting. I am going to get some seeds in later in the week. And I hope to help Kes with her garden some this year too. Weeding has commenced.
The cats are settling in for their afternoon nap. I will catch up on the next episode of Gardeners’ World. More daffodils. A balm for this troubled world.
