Oh, Wednesday... in 2014: The Year of Learning to Simplify

I'm not feeling well today. I woke up with an inflammation flare up in my teeth, which always leads to pain and the swallowing of multiple ibuprofen throughout the day, if not an out and out knocking myself out to sleep through the pain. I have an appointment to have all of the offending teeth surgically removed on June 4th, and I'm looking forward to that like a five year old looking forward to Christmas Eve and Santa Clause. Who knew dental surgery could inspire so much happiness?

Aaron smoked his last cigarette on Sunday, and is spending the week learning how to be a non smoker, so in the interest of creating a stress environment for the week, we gave the kids a break from school. I am very proud of him. He's smoked since he was nine years old, and he'll turn 35 this year, so I know it can't be an easy thing at all, but he's doing well. He did the smart thing and weaned himself down to only a few cigarettes a day (when he was smoking a pack and a half before), and then cut out the remaining few this week. I've got high hopes he'll finally kick the habit this time. I don't nag him about his smoking, because he smoked when we got together and I don't think it would be fair for me to criticize a behavior when I've known about it all along, but I've always hoped he'd be able to quit.

I did something last weekend I never thought I'd do....I submitted a resume for a job opening in my old field (retail management). It was a spur of the moment thing. The opening is at a competitor of my former employer, is for the same job I was doing previously, for at least 10k more in salary a year. I really did love the work I used to do, until upper management ruined all that, so I don't think I'll mind doing the same job somewhere else. I have a phone interview with a corporate rep on Friday and then we'll go from there. From what I've heard from other applicants, it can take up to a month to get through the interview process.

My business is...well, it's business as usual, which has never been very good. I'm suffering from people who book a session and cancel last minute, or just don't show up at all. I can't attract new clients without new material in my portfolio, and if I can even give away a session, then what am I doing wrong? I'm spending this week going over my processes and my marketing to figure out where I can shore things up and try to get things back on track.

I did a fun thing the other night and made my first batch of cold process soap. I had to switch out my planned recipe at the last minute, as I didn't have enough olive to do the one I'd originally started with (I'm not used to thinking in terms of grams), but it was so easy and turned out beautifully! I actually get to remove it from the mold and cut it into bars today, and then I'll make a new batch and fill the mold back up again. :) I figure I can try a new recipe every two days and then in 4-6 weeks I'll have quite the collection of handmade soap! Aaron and I both love the stuff, and he's found that handmade mint soap clears up a lot of skin conditions that he has, including athlete's foot. The recipe I did two days ago heavily featured mint as an ingredient, per Aaron's request. It's a fun new hobby that doesn't take up a whole lot of time.

Well, my ibuprofen has kicked in, so back to work, I suppose. Have a good day, everyone!
