Dragged forward by time in Many things

My dog was euthanized at approximately 5:15pm.

Maybe its human nature, the need to give reason and meaning. Maybe he was a dog that just wanted to stay out a bit longer.

Inside our home, were the people who were ready to euthanize him. Any other day he would have acted differently, but today, he just wanted to stay out a little longer. He didn’t want to move nor meet new people. He didn’t want to come in. I didn’t want him to go in. So we stayed there with him for awhile. I can’t help but think that he understood. So he stood at the entrance. Unresponsive, unmovable. We listened to all the many sounds of life that seemed so vibrant under the sun. He didn’t want to go.

The first shot sedated him. He lost consciousness. That was goodbye. The second shot stopped his heart. His eyes were still open, but his body lifeless.

Life is cruel.
