Be kind, for the sake of being kind. Do something nice, and don’t expect anything in return. Just do it. Don’t try and take credit for it.
I’ll be the first one to admit, I really don’t have any faith in society. People are predominately selfish, greedy, dishonest, manipulative, oblivious, and entitled. At least, that’s my take on what people are now. I’ve lived in Seattle too long, I admit. Because of what I see all day every day, I’m less willing to take a chance on people. It’s part of why I’m single. I’ve had really crap luck with dating, and seeing what I see with people, as much as I don’t like being alone, I’m not as willing to go out and put effort into dating. That’s probably why the house looks like crap. Oh well.
Tonight I did something out of character. I was asked for help by a woman with her daughter, in the supermarket parking lot. Her car had broken down a couple miles away, sounded like something with the transmission, and she was trying to get enough to have it towed home. Normally I would be politely dismissive, and that would be that. Tonight, I actually helped. I’m not saying this for credit. I gave her what I had in my wallet, talked to her for a while, and tried to get her to laugh. I succeeded in that.
I then went into the store and started getting what I went for, and gave a little more thought to their situation. By the time I got to the register, I’d decided to get her to the point she could pay for the tow truck, so she could get the car towed 15 miles home. I came out, put my stuff in the truck (first time it’s been out in over a month), then saw her and her daughter an aisle over, walked over to them and told her to call the tow truck so she could get home. I handed her the rest and she kinda calmly freaked out. She called the tow truck, and I got them in the truck and took them over to her car. Timing was excellent, as when we stopped at the red light, the tow truck turned toward her car in front of us. She thanked me profusely, and her daughter (probably 6 or 7 years old) thanked me several times.
It did feel nice to actually be proven wrong about people. For once. I can’t say I’ll do that again. I don’t know that I will. Sometimes, you just gotta be nice, for the sake of being nice. This year has sucked. More so for some than others. You have no idea what your kindness might mean to someone else.
Tomorrow is a half day, then I have a long weekend. I’m trying to figure out how to totally avoid Christmas day. Meh. I don’t think I’m going to stay awake much longer. My mind’s been being a bastard all day, and I’m running on 4 hours of sleep, and 3 cups of coffee. The exhaustion is obvious, as I can barely focus on typing this.
If I don’t come back on before then, I hope you all have a Happy Christmas, and a Merry New Year. Yes, I did that intentionally. Or happy whatever winter holiday you celebrate.
