It was high school the last time I'd saw her. Which, I must not lie, was quite some time ago. We were inseparable for most of our school years, right up until college. And then I saw her. I saw her and not a day had passed. It was high school and there were a lot of social rules to be followed. We let our music decide which clique we were going to be a part of. Letting music define you was just how we did it in those days. You listened to what defined you, and didn't dare listen to anything else. (Even if secretly you actually liked something other than what was allowed.) So, with my group, it was heavy metal, alternative, and punk. Nothing more. There were favorites of course, but nothing out of those realms. We had gotten heavily into one particular band. They were a metal band from Germany. I just thought that was the coolest thing ever. Who knew what they were saying right? Anyways, they were known for putting on some good concerts, so I figured what the heck, might as well go see them live. Well, that was more than what we had bargained for. We were hooked instantly, buying up every piece of music we could get our hands on. CD's, videos, t-shirts, posters, ect. It was turning into the fun little obsession. Completely harmless. We played a certain live CD over and over as loudly as we could, at every little chance that we could. There was a certain song in particular. And in this song, like many of the others, there was a specific little, shall we say, dance to it. It got to the point that we would just do the gestures, or dance, even when the song wasn't on. We would see someone doing it, and just know what they were doing. I still do it from time to time, but not really. Just the raising of the arms part. Hands completely out while raising your arms slowly. Just brings me back sometimes. So, with all of this in mind, I will move on with my story. I joined a gym. A small gym up the road. I needed to get out of the cold for a while. I was just going to be a member until the snow melted, and then discontinue membership. It was a nice gym. It had everything that I needed, which really isn't much. It was a Saturday morning, so I left the kids with their father so that I could get a workout in before the day started. I was about half way done with my walk on the treadmill when something caught my eye. Movement coming from the elliptical machines. It was a woman. She looked, from the back like she was having the time of her life on that machine. And then, suddenly, she does the arms move from our favorite song in high school. And I'm watching her now. And she's doing it again. And suddenly, I'm realizing, this is my very best friend from high school. We hadn't spoken in almost a decade. But there she is, doing that dance, right in front of me. I start to wonder. I feel like I should do something. Should I wait for her to get done on the machine, and approach her? Then it hits me. I turn off my treadmill. I get off and walk over to the elliptical right next to hers. She hasn't noticed me yet, but she will very soon. I listen, and sure enough, I can hear very quietly, coming from her head phones, our song from way back when. I hop onto the machine and start dancing right where I know the song is at. Sure enough, she looks at me. I flash her a smile and she is radiating right back at me. We finish the song out.
