We fall as leaves here –
Winds sweetly swept of remembrance
Bear us away.
Think we not of our trees, bear of bark,
To blister in the sun.
We are too stubborn for our season.
We avert our eyes from rising ground,
Early brown & uninviting.
Know we only those who fall like us,
Loving only this last opportunity
To avoid compounding our grief with loneliness.
Cruel this wind, architect of our destruction,
Emerges our unwitting savior!
Blowing us all alike, though direction or height do vary.
We know only this one comfort:
“We here, not alone”.
