i’m pretty sure i could go back to bed now and sleep the rest of the day. and night. i feel like i’m way overdue an infusion. i just spent five confused minutes trying to figure out why i didn’t have a hospital appointment. clicking through a row of mondays. oh, right. tuesdays. next week. not mondays. the last one was monday. before christmas. maybe i should go back to bed. it’s going to be a long week.

i think i finally got through to the old bugger. he’s off on a four day road trip, visiting friends. he trimmed the hedge out the front last week, too. and the power cord. there’s another, longer hedge that needs trimming but i won’t offer to do that. and not for fear of electrocuting myself on the repaired power cord but because he needs to stay active. before the valve was replaced he always had a project he was working on. or would be out helping me. complaining about being dizzy. leaning on something to catch his breath. ignoring me when i tell him to go inside and sit down. asking why i’m digging a hole in the middle of the garden.

since the valve surgery he’s mostly just sat and watched tv because his legs hurt. he’s probably seen everything on animal planet multiple times now. probably still grumbles every time he sees the two girls out rescuing pitbulls, “why do young ladies cover themselves in tattoos these days?” i dunno. “hmph. i don’t understand it. why do they do it?” um, i dunno. “hmph,” a pause, “she’s covered in them.” the girl on the tv is trying to coax a pitbull from under a building. she bends over to put a leash on it, “do you reckon she’s even got tattoos on her fanny?” a small, strangled cough. yeah, uhh… yeah, probably. i look over. was that a joke? no, he’s serious. a contemplative expression on his face mixed with slight confusion. okay. time to go home. righto, mate. catch you later.

i’ve been saying to him for weeks now that he’s had bad blood circulation for several years. now he’s got good circulation with the new valve. it’ll take a while for his body to adjust. then he told me the exact same thing before he trimmed the hedge, as if i’d never heard it before. he said his legs hurt before he started trimming the hedge, then felt better while he was trimming the hedge but that might have been the wd-40 he’d sprayed on the trimmer. then his legs hurt again after he finished the hedge and sat down. then the next day he was off on a road trip.

a few weeks back he was complaining about blurred vision. the doctor said he was getting cataracts. he rang up one day and asked if i’d take him into town and help him buy a new tv. i was pretty sure a new tv wasn’t going to help his blurred vision so before we left i adjusted the brightness setting on the tv. it seemed to work. he didn’t want to buy a new tv after that. when he first mentioned blurred vision i asked if he ever had headaches, thinking it might be a migraine. nope. he’s never had headaches. never really had any health problems. i think that’s what has slowed him down these last few months with his legs. he’s never had to deal with an ongoing health, or pain problem before.
