Moving Forward with a Smile in 2014: The Year of Learning to Simplify

I've discovered in the past couple of weeks that I can be happy with so much less than I'm accustomed to.

Aaron and have really embraced the ideas of simplicity and self-sufficiency and we are working hard to put so many plans into place so that we can move toward being dependent on our selves and not a paycheck that can be taken away without warning.

We bought chickens yesterday, little fluffy, downy baby chicks that are adorable. Three of them are Isa Browns, but we aren't really sure about the others; I won't really be able to tell for a few more weeks, I don't think. We bought six in total, which will be plenty enough to keep our family in eggs, plus have some surplus to sell if we want. Everything that we do now is done with the thought in mind, "How can we make this pay for itself?"

I went to the local hardware store today and bought the timbers I need to build a clothesline, and a couple dozen foundation block for building raised garden beds. The kids and I planted seedlings this afternoon: watermelon (on their insistence), acorn squash, broccoli, tomatoes and echinacea. I have a dozen more seedling types to get started once the kids go to bed. So many yummy things we're growing this year and I can't wait to be canning our own salsa and tomato sauce and pickles. Yum.

I'd really love to have a few sheep, though I sadly don't think we have the room. We do have quite a hillside behind the house, but no room for a barn/shelter, so I guess that dream will have to wait a bit.

My business is actually doing much better now that I have the time to put myself into it and actually go after the business I want. I shot a wedding for a good friend and former coworker yesterday, and I have several shoots coming up through April. I'm just looking to start building momentum and keep things going.

I'm going to try to start writing and noting more often; I miss journaling.
