even then i didn’t have time to get everything on my list. when i first switched to ashburton hospital i think they looked the procedure up and did it by the book which means you set the pump to go slowly then ramp it up every fifteen minutes until it gets to the recommended full speed. the nurses at christchurch hospital were a bit more relaxed and would let me set the pump at whatever speed i wanted. which was only 10ml/h more than the guideline recommends. at first i’d set the pump to a million miles and it’s nice to have the infusion finish faster but it’s also nice not to have to crawl out of the hospital. the nurses in christchurch also used to let me take the tube out of the pump and wring the bubbles out when the alarm went off, and at the end they’d leave a little kidney dish with bandages and things so i could disconnect the tube from the needle and take the needle out myself. i’m pretty sure it’d take a cold, cold day in hell before that would happen in this hospital. i can’t even walk in there and say “oh, it’s little chilly outside” without being buried in fussing and warmed blankets. but anyway. now that one nurse has skipped the slow build up phase of the infusion if there’s a different nurse on next time i can say the last nurse skipped that part and i didn’t die much so let’s do it again. starting the infusion slower doesn’t make me feel any better or worse it just adds another hour to the whole thing.

so i got out early and zoomed around the store. i saved browsing the plant section for last because i need time to wander about going “hmm” and “ahh”. i didn’t have enough time for that. the seed section didn’t have any native tree seeds and i definitely didn’t have time to go to a different store. or even look at the vegetable seeds. i did have time to grab some citrus fertilizer and compost because those fucking lemon trees are going to grow at least one lemon even if it kills me. i also grabbed some plastic plant container bags to move my 18 cabbage trees into and if peter looked at the plastic bags and started grumbling internally about microplastics he at least didn’t say anything. i’ll try and reuse them for other trees. after that i had to drive home, empty the car then drive to timaru to drop the car off to get it fixed. i don’t think i’ll try get so much done after an infusion for a while. or maybe i will. i just have to fill my pockets with migraine pills.

the old bugger called on thursday. he had a car boot full of sacks of compost for the tomatoes in the glass house. he didn’t think i could lift the sacks out myself since it took three people to get them in there. i got them out and into the glass house relatively easily. i’m guessing the three people he mentioned were all 80-something year olds. he’s all set to sow his tomatoes now. it looked like rain that afternoon so i came back the next day to spray the weeds that have taken over the front patch of garden. once they’re dead i’ll rake them into a pile and burn them. he had a leaky tap in his kitchen too so i got him to call peter to pick up a new one and we replaced that on saturday. he’d pushed himself too far that day, at one point while turning the water off and partially freaking out about the water not turning off he called out to me and called me andrew. i didn’t say anything, he’s pretty sharp for an 89 year old and if he makes a mistake like that and you mention it to him he gets visibly distraught. i’m also in trouble because i’ve been bringing the dog treats so now whenever he gets visitors the dog tries to stick his nose in their pockets.
