Sometime in the late winter of 1978 I pulled my snowmobile up in front of the base exchange. Not unusual, we lived at Loring AFB - now mostly know for the annual whatever-fest put on by Phish and other bands of their ilk.
One of those things about that base was with a snowmobile you really could go everywhere.
I was shopping for a stereo. At the time I was working as a bagger at the commissary and I had enough money to pay for part of a cool combination turntable-cassette-8 track. Spirits Having Flow had been released and was all over the radio.
My current crush at the time - Cathy Webber - had the total hots for Barry Gibb. I thought buying the album would give me an "in" the next time my crowd met at my friend Lance's house.
I got the biggest smile when I broke out the LP. Unfortunately it wasn't for me.
It was for Barry.
I don't know exactly when I transitioned to heavy metal, but that weekend must have been pretty close.
