The Doppler Effect is an increase (or decrease) in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward (or away from) each other. The effect causes the sudden change in pitch noticeable in a passing siren. But what if you are standing still? In this instance, you would still be moving. But yet, you are not moving. Things suddenly become relative.
Let’s take life insurance for instance. You’re betting you die young, the insurance company is betting you die old. Say what? If you die young you have paid little for the premium, die old you have paid a lot. Things that make you go hmmm!
And then there is marriage. It is a dying institution. ( Hence the “til death” section of the contract.) Actually fewer people are taking that plunge these days. But if you look at statistics it’s 50/50 pretty much straight across the board. And the odds are no better for those who profess to be Christian.
It’s an accumulation of forces seemingly beyond our control that effects our life’s. Just as you can’t make someone love you, you can’t make someone stay married to you. As I get older, I look at life differently. Things I used to think were so important now just seem to get in the way. Looks fade, money is lost, the libido dies and you wake up one-morning asking yourself, “When did I get so old?” The foundation you built your life on has crumbled. So you sit across the table staring into the eyes of a total stranger that you have spent half your life with only to realize the only thing you have in common with each other is a mortgage and two car payments.
It’s the Doppler Effect–You were standing still yet you were moving away from each other, and you never even noticed. Become complacent in a relationship will do that to you.
