Full discloser: I tend to take this whole literal thing way too far, but it helps defeat the boredom.
Some once said variety is the spice of life. If that is true I am about as exciting as vanilla ice cream. I can walk into any store that has 31 flavors and I am going to pick, you guessed it, vanilla. But that has little to do with being literal.
I work as an I. T. Tech. (Notice I did not say I.T. Professional?) Be it my personality, or my training, I like a clear, precise explanation of the problem before I arrive. That way, in many cases I can diagnose the problem before I arrive and bring the needed equipment/parts to fix the problem and get the customer back on the internet or computer.
A typical day starts at 7. That way I can finish up any loose ends from the previous day and get to the more urgent problems before the staff arrives. My work orders read like a 1st grader wrote some of them. “My Computer doesn’t work.” Hmmm, does that mean it doesn’t take out the trash? Or, like your husband, when you talk to it, the darn thing just sits there and stares into space? Armed with little information I will go into the room and troubleshoot first by observing and then testing. This one is easy…” there is a button on the front of the computer, that, if not light up with a green glow means, You need to turn the computer ON!” (I left it on last night when I left :-) ) Well it wasn’t on when I came to look at it just now.
Or, “My Computer is making a noise.” Okay is it a cough, a wheezing sound or more like a siren going off? Say What? The siren sound tells me they have been a victim of what we call “scareware” Nothing more exciting than to click on a link and have your computer start screaming at you with a very loud siren.
And then there is my favorite. Can you come look at my computer? Sure, I have the capabilities. (Oh, that’s not what you meant?) So, I walk in the room, look at the computer and leave. After all, that is what they asked! Granted I have been on this job for 5 years and they all know me and my strange personality. As I tell them, 90% of the time, if you will just turn the computer off and back on it will fix the problem. And it does help if you turn on your monitor as well. (Is it plugged in? Sure)
