Are we born with it or do we develop it over time? I suppose the opinions on this subject will vary just as they do with the whole which came first the chicken or the egg. But since it’s my blog and my thoughts I get to control the discussion. Think of it as Government overreach or Government censorship. My blog, My Rules, don’t like it, don’t come to visit. Pretty simple if you ask me. But then there are those who feel it is there God given need to come along and start a fight—Common Sense or perhaps common courtesy be damned!

Dating, oh how it has changed. I have done my own research on dating in the 22nd century and I have come to my own conclusions. I took out a six-month subscription to E-harmony. My matches pretty much missed the mark every single time. (Sidebar, I work with computers on a daily basis, why would I trust one to find “true love”?—it’s a rhetorical question I think we all know the answer–Desperate, comes to mind.) The system even stopped matching my profile..until a week ago. My membership is set to expire in less than 30 days. Coincidence, I think not. It’s like the system knows they are going to lose my membership money so let’s throw this sucker fish a pretty shiny lure to get him to bite again.

Don’t get me wrong, Neil has countless testimonials from couples who have found each other on E-harmony. Statistics don’t lie. They can be manipulated, but they never lie. So we learn to skew the answers by asking the right questions. Let’s say, for instance, I am a beef producer. (Does that make me a bull? Maybe a cow?) I want to show the rest of the country that more people eat beef than pork. How will he do it? Simple, I do the survey in the states that have the highest concentration of Jews or Muslims. Why? Because I can take that data and prove my point. More people eat beef!

So back to the original question. Common Sense, are we born with it or do we develop it over time? In some cases, it is neither. Now let me go ponder this whole chicken or the egg thing.

:) I tend to see common sense as a matter of cultural observation, teaching, experience, and innate ability. Growing up where I did, with the influences I did, with the opportunities that I had, and the genetics that I had... common sense was "don't do something stupid." Which translated to me as: Follow the rules, don't break the law, be courteous to others... what I thought of as "common sense." But in Law School, my Best Friend and I worked in the Department of Corrections. Despite both of us being Mid-western White Men in Law School... the large majority of inmates thought that the fact that neither of us had ever been arrested was a magic trick beyond the realm of reason. For them, it seemed, that common sense was "No matter what happens, you will get arrested at some point." Though I may be mistaking "cultural expectation" with "common sense" but... it does seem that what you're raised to expect from your surroundings directly impacts what we consider "common sense." In Gangland Territory, it's "common sense" to wear the right colors, treat the right people a certain way, all that. But Lord knows I wouldn't have the first idea about any of that so whereas in my "world" we'd look at the kid getting aggressive with strangers as "lacking common sense" but in that kid's world, it could be true that my behavior would be seen as "lacking in common sense."

It just amazes me that seemingly normal adults can do things that could cost them their life. And that I have to put a 'do not try this at home' disclaimer. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by.
