The pavlovian theory is a learning procedure that involves pairing a stimulus with a conditioned response. ( And all this time I thought it was the name of a few dates I went on!! Just Kidding) Now back to our regularly scheduled topic.
Conditioned Response is basically achieved by repetition. And we are creatures of habit. According to Pavlov’s Dog, we just need to hear a sound to be stimulated. (Men, just need to visualize.)
This type of conditioning can be good or bad. Rain on a tin roof puts me to sleep. So I duplicate this sound every night. Works great. Until the power goes out. Dead silence creeps me out.
Jungle Gardenia reminds me of a girl I dated in high school. She wore it every date we went on. There was something about that smell that was irresistible. I can almost smell it now and I smile and think of her!
I am amazed at how sounds, smells, or a song can trigger a memory or emotion that has long since been suppressed in our hippocampus. (Al, do you think they call it hippocampus because it’s a camp for hippos) We have so many memories stored in our hippocampus that we forget them until something triggers them.
So if you see me drooling one day like Pavlov’s Dog, it may be an uncontrollable response from the perfume you are wearing. I will just lick your face and be fine!
