I had the privilege of bringing my students to the Singapore air show where the Black Knights were performing. The results... well.

I want to state that these first couple of pictures are because the MC decided it would be cool if he could get everyone to jump into the air at the same time. Photographers were exempt.

I love the conjunction of enthusiasm on the right and the yeah, let's get this over with on the left.

The emcee asked for another try:

which I rather like the outcome of.

I screwed up my lens selection for the first flight, which was an F-16 from the US. I did get a nice picture,

but while my 20mm gave a good coverage of the sky, I couldn't get any clarity on the shots.

I switched over to the 14-42mm kit lens for the next flight (an F-18 from Australia), which was worse, although I got one nice shot when the Hornet was near, showing vapour trails:

In desperation I switched over to what I refer to as my astronomy lens, just as the announcer called the Black Knights out.

And...it worked

Bomb burst separation

Holy crap.

And then they did it again.

Upping the stakes on the crossover:

And the finale:

Full aerial display album here (I still haven't finished sorting the static display ones)

Oh yeah. One last thing.

After the airshow I went back to school for the astronomy session. It was a good night-- I got this:

That's M42, the Great Nebula in Orion. I got that in Singapore skies using the motorised mount and a bit of scrubbing in post-processing. I'm quite proud of this one.

For an astronomer, the sky is the lower limit.
