Prologue
June 12th, 2012
The melting caramel ice cream dripped down my hands, a sticky mess. I looked to my best friend, Deriah, for help, but she was busy herself with messy hands as well. Our eyes met and we cracked up. Other people around us were startled by our sudden guffawing, but that made it even funnier. Looking back at it now, we both knew it was a perfect day. The most perfect day of my life. I wish I hadn’t taken it for granted, but that was the last “good” moment of my life. Deriah and I were just 11 years old. The peak of innocence and childish joy. Later that day everything went spiraling out of my control. Some could say it was the end of my life, but really, it was just the beginning of one much worse.
