Development Scare in Life

Today has been a difficult day.

I am 23 weeks pregnant with a girl.

Everything on her 20 week anatomy scan came back normal…except for something in her brain.

Everyone has choroid plexus in their brain. They create brain fluid to surround and cushion the brain. Sometimes during development, they gain too much fluid and become enlarged, creating a cyst. My baby has a cyst on her brain right now.

The doctor said it is very small (7 mm), and is just hitting the cyst mark. Usually, these things are around 6 mm or less. Once they hit 7 mm, it’s something to look at. 14 cm is an issue. Usually, the cyst corrects itself and the baby is fine. This is normally the case. My doctor said he sees this about 2-3 times a month and it’s usually nothing. He said if it was his child, he wouldn’t be concerned.

If the cyst grows, it could mean a few things. 1- this plus other markers could be an indication of Down syndrome. She has no other markers. Everything else on her scan was perfect. 2- it could be a rare genetic disorder called trisomy 18. This is when a baby develops a third pair of chromosome 18 instead of 2. This leads to severe mental deficiencies and the baby does not live long after birth. This is very rare.

Most likely, there is nothing wrong with her. Most likely, this issue will resolve itself. Most likely, she is fine. It could even be that the tech measured incorrectly. It’s a 1 mm difference between something and nothing. 1 mm.

I had never heard of this before today and it scared me. Any time something could be wrong with your baby, it’s scary. It’s probably like my heart thing at the beginning of the pregnancy and it’s nothing. Just makes you take a step back and put things into perspective.

I called Dann after my appointment. He’s been great. So supportive and understanding and positive. I’m so lucky to have him as my husband and father of my children. He is my calm in the storm. He knows what to say to help me calm down.

So now I have another scan on 3/2 and talk to my doctor on 3/8, my birthday. I’m taking the day off of work and Dann is going with me to the appointment. Hopefully everything is fine.

On a positive note, we have decided to name her Vivienne Amanda. We both love the name Vivienne and her middle name is after me.
