I could enjoy that

Potatoes O’Brien
It appears that this is a popular dish that goes back to 1900 or so. I never heard of it before, but when I seen it on the my patriot supply website I had to try it. I wanted it so bad I ordered a case of it. The fact that it was under $20 plus shipping helped. Now I have 5 unopened packs of Potatoes O’Brien in my cabinet, but I have no regrets.

Preparation is easy, but more involved than a mountain house meal. One serving is a half cup of potato mix and a half cup of boiling water. Let it sit for the recommended amount of time then fry it with a tablespoon of oil.

The packaging is pretty standard; mylar pouch and oxygen absorber. They claim there is 8 servings per pouch and since a case is six pouches I got 48 servings for about $18 plus shipping. Not a bad deal in my eyes.

I have to admit that the pictures made this look delicious and that was the driving force behind why I bought it. Well, that, and my wife makes something similar on occasion for breakfast and I know that is delicious. Like a kid on Christmas, when the package arrived I immediately tore into it and made one serving. The portion size was decent and since I scrambled myself some eggs I had a might fine meal. The potatoes were quite tasty, but a bit bland and suffered from the same thing all other freeze dried food suffers from, not fully dehydrating. I like the fact that it has a very low sodium content, 25mg per serving, compared to other comparable products that have 10 times that amount per serving.

Now I must say that the potatoes O’brien is not a product that would be a good fit for everyone in every situation. If this were an add boiling water, let stand then eat kind of thing it would be, but it is not, and I am glad for that. With that being said, I intend on portioning some out in a ziploc bag or two for a multi day camping trip and I also plan on having it on hand for the right emergency or when I just feel like eating it. I am willing to purchase more, but only when it’s on sale because I am a cheapskate.
