I love how I move to Utah, and THIS is the place where it's acceptable to have alcohol at small children's birthday parties.
I did the secondhand birthday thing, and it was great. We had a glorified playdate with secondhand presents, and everyone was happy. I had three friends over, and Emmy scored some pretty great presents, most of which were from the local kids' consignment store. It takes a lot of pressure off the host to put on some kind of show if you know your friends aren't spending a wad of money for toys your kid will break in a week. We had pizza, cake, veggies & dip (not in that order), and it was good.
My friends and I sat around visiting and drinking responsibly (really!), and the kids played until they were exhausted. Now Emmy and Grace are having a sleepover in Emmy's room. By which I mean that Emmy is still awake and talking to herself, and Grace passed out at least half an hour ago.
