Road trip? in A small but passable life.

The Ben Bova books are a series called “Star Quest” this fourth one was published in 2017. I started it this morning with coffee.

Mom and I headed out at 10am. We went on a quest for Sunday brunch. We should have known better. We went by a half dozen restaurants. Every one had a dozen or more people lined up outside the door. Damn snowbirds. A couple of months from now and we’ll once again have EVERYTHING to ourselves for at least six months.

We were at Nikki’s early. Too early. We went around the corner to an empty parking lot and found a completely empty Subway. We went in and got Mom a sandwich. So much for a proper Sunday brunch.

After I dropped Mom off I headed over on foot to the Goodwill store. I found a non-fiction paperback book and a cute little kitchen utensil holder thingy for the counter top.

I went into Big Lots and found a package of 325 coffee filters and a twin sized sheet set for my bed for $10. And a pillow for $6. I needed at least one new pillow to replace one that has gotten rather flat.

The sheet set is micro fiber polyester. They feel softer than cotton. And I’m thinking they may be cooler than cotton. We’ll see. They are also a dark grey almost black color which means I won’t have to wash them as often as those light blue ones I’ve been using. More than once a month is just a pain in the ass. Especially now that I’m showering more than once a week.

I took Mom to the fabric store and went next door to another Goodwill store. I found a nice little wood shelf by Ikea that was still in the package, for $3. I was needing one to put above the plug where I charge my devices. This one will be perfect.

It was cloudy again today. The second day in a row I haven’t been lying poolside. I should be able to remedy that tomorrow. There is a forecast high of 77 for tomorrow. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Mom wants to travel somewhere, anywhere. We’re talking road trip. I’m researching several options on transportation. She just wants to take the car and GO. And figure out everything else while GOING. Problem is that she gets tired. And when she gets tired she gets cranky. When she gets hungry she gets cranky. And then there is the whole personal mobility thing.

I can see it. I’ll set up my lawn chair on a beach for Mom. I’ll hand her a sandwich, a cup of coffee, and a blanket. I’ll tell her “Just sit there and chill out a bit! I’ll be back.”

No, really, I’m sure we’d be good nomads. We’d adjust. I do like my routine life, but I’m perfectly able to wander around like a fucking idiot if need be. I just don’t know how Mom would do without her routine.

We’re thinking about starting with an Airbnb for a few nights in San Diego and go from there.

It may work. If not we’ll just come back home from wherever we’ve made it to.

You two sound like a tv series - let's see who could play you - Meryl Streep or Judi Dench can be your mom - depending on who old they want her - and I think Sean Penn would be good as you.
