Taking a break from the never-ending "senior audits", which is one of those things I'm always glad to start doing each semester because by now I've gotten bored and it's something different... then three days into it I'm about to lose.my.mind. Soon it will be time to check out the ones who have applied to graduate, and we'll switch gears again and THAT will be fun for, oh, three days... then I'll be screaming "GAWD I'M BORED!!!"

I wouldn't really say my job is boring, and I do like it, but... it does get kind of samey. And when we're doing audits or graduation checks, I start feeling very pressured to get them done, and feel like I can't take a break and glance at facebook or PB or whatever, because ... MUST.KEEP.WORKING. Then I get really cranky because it's tedious and tiring. And boring and I hate being bored.

This seemed like a good time for a break, though. A good time to share my thoughts ... my bewilderment, really ....over the names people choose to give their children. For example, who in the hell names their kid Shady Grove?!? That's first and middle name, and she's got quite an unusual last name too but it has nothing to do with shades or groves, which is probably a good thing. I'm a fan of interesting names (interesting, not pretentious, and yes I have deemed there IS a difference) and I can see how after a few glasses of wine naming your kid Shady Grove might seem like the best idea EVER. It sounds so calm! So peaceful!! It's such a pretty song! And yes, it is a great song; I love the song.

But I'll wager that when people are calling your kid "Shady", it isn't the pretty song that comes to mind. Calling someone shady really suggests, at least to me, that this person is a little on the suspicious side. Not to be trusted, Devious. Deceptive. SO, yeah! Way to go, mom and dad!

I'm actually just assuming Shady Grove is a girl. But whatever, he/she is pretty much doomed to a life of petty crime and back-door drug deals and drinking a whole lot of gin in speakeasies.

Think before you name, people. Think. Before. You. Name.

It really is a great song, though. Especially Doc Watson's version.

Great naming advice.

I have a friend who is a nurse in a hospital nursery and she has some great naming stories.

Love that banjo. You do have to admit that Shady Grove Jones would make a great character name though. :)

Oh, it TOTALLY would!

I'm now afraid to out my kids, um...., interesting names. LOL!

Oh, I love interesting! I just have a job where I see unending ...bizarre names. If I'd had kids I shudder to to think what we would have named them.

Holy shit. I hope Shady is a girl. Shady Business McAlester. Shady Past Dennison. Shady Behavior Jackson. I could go on.

If she's slim though, and she stands up - way cool ;-)

My girls have different names. Talaia is named for a mountain in Ibiza which she has been up at the grand old age of 9 months! Lila is Spanish for lilac because I love that flower :) x

Now, I love those names- they are different and NOT pretentious, which I'm afraid a lot of poor kids get stuck with due to their parents trying to find an unusual name. I love names that are different and have a meaning to them. Of course poor Shady's name has a meaning too and it's probably a very nice meaning.... but I don't think her parents really considered how her name would work in the real world.

I second what Edna says down there - these are INTERESTING names - and yes there IS a difference - definitely! :)

Too late. People tell me I made my kid's name up. Nobody can pronounce it, nobody can spell it, and people think he's a girl. Hey! I found it LEGIT in a BOOK! LOL
