Flowers in the Attic by V. C. Andrews

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

The story about about four siblings Chris, Cathy, Carrie and Cory (told by Cathy) who after the death of their father find out that they have a rich grandfather who disinherited their mother after she married her half-uncle, their father. They travel to his enormous mansion where they are locked away in a single room by their cruel grandmother to wait until their grandfather dies and they can come out of it to live a life of splendour.

As I was reading I though that no way could this book earn more than 4 stars. I definitely enjoyed reading it but the foolishness of the story and the many silly things and plot holes made me think that no way could this be a book that I could recommend to someone. The characters seemed unrealistic and at times unlikable, even Cathy our main protagonist. But towards the end it kind of grew towards me. Maybe it was its theme of parental abandonment or the overall tragedy of the story, but in the end I did not have the heart to give it just 3 stars. So my opinion is that it's an enjoyable book if you don't expect too much and are prepared to let some things slide under the radar.
