This is a little writing for a friend of mine who has had some rough times…

The Battle Within

Sometimes we have a battle within
That no one sees, but never ends.
It plagues and tears and rips away
Our moral foundations in endless ways.

We say things that hurt our loved ones;
And do things that hurt ourselves.
We play with loaded weapons
And damn others to hell.

Then comes a time when the battle within
Comes out and shows it wins.
We stand there, fists of hair in hand,
With only tears to make amends.

We step back and see what we’ve done
And wonder what caused the rage.
Maybe it’s the life we’ve led;
Punking out on the world stage.

Addictions to pass, friends to remake
As time floats on by.
Precision anthems call our name
As we forego our strength to cry.

Dedicated to Audrey Wilson on her 19th Birthday, February 20, 2002.
May you find your shining star and sail on the brightest moons.
