Memories Ahead

By: Joe Jenkins

I dream about the times gone by
And all the things beyond my eye.
I ponder meaning until it’s dead
But close my eyes to what’s ahead.

Why must I be so cut and dried;
And not open myself to the air outside?
May I partake in your happiness today or tonight
Or be lonely from noon till night?

The future should be bright and held by friends,
But mine seems empty and silent within.
I should be keen to memories ahead
But see empty future till the day I am dead.

I will never be able to tell my future, you see
But I will always know what some mean to me.
When they are gone and out of my life,
I am so bleak and studded with strife.

Happiness should come one day to be here;
That day I await so I may be near.
Near to my present and far from my past,
I will roam in silence to heaven at last.

Those who can feel what others feel inside
Can feel nothing from me, and many have tried.
I shut them out of my mind and my soul
But they’ll keep on pushing ‘till I grow old.

Memories ahead to be set free;
Will love’s hands ever grasp ‘round me?
If they do I’ll be open armed,
If they don’t reach, I’ll be none-harmed.
