Catching Up in Random

I know this was all the buzz a couple months ago, but I finally made it over to the old OD site and I have to say, I am pretty excited for it to be coming back. Also excited I’ll still have my Lifetime membership, along with all my old entries. I hope people end up going back. Nothing has ever been as good, and nowhere has ever felt as much like home.

I know I don’t post much. I’m happily (and boringly) posting daily over on blogger, because I can’t not. But, as I always say, it’s a lonely world there.

Let’s see. A lot has happened since I last posted.

We finally got certified as foster parents in early September. It took them three months to write up the home study report after our final interview, and we haven’t gotten a clear answer on why it took that long (another couple in our classes, who started the home study process later, was certified a full two months before we were). But, it’s done.

And between getting certified and getting a placement, my sister fell into a deep depression and was hospitalized for a while. When she was released from the hospital, she came to live with us. We have a small, 100 year-old house and only had one available bed, so this means we can’t become foster parents for as long as she is living with us.

It’s a huge disappointment. But instead of dwelling on it, I’m trying to focus on the fact that I can become a guardian ad litem for the time being (a court-appointed volunteer who works with a child for their duration in the foster system and who advocates for what is in the child’s best interest). It’s a different way of helping than I had envisioned, especially since I couldn’t adopt one of these kids, but it’s helping. And we can always revisit later.

So I start the interview process for that in two weeks, and the classes start in February. It’s a long way off, but it’s something to keep me from feeling like I went through all of this for nothing.
